Phosa adds voice to ANC leadership battle
Mathews Phosa said leaders who fail should be honourable and fall on their swords.
JOHANNESBURG - African National Congress (ANC) Treasurer Mathews Phosa on Wednesday said leaders who failed should make way for leaders who could do a better job.
He also mentioned that government should create a small and specialised anti-corruption unit.
It has been speculated that Phosa is part of an ANC group that will oppose another term for President Jacob Zuma at the ANC's Mangaung conference.
"If you fail in your duties, you should have the honour to fall on your sword," said Phosa.
He denied talking about anyone specific.
"They are state principles because, if you want to lead, the principles apply no matter who you are."
Phosa also answered carefully when asked if his proposed anti-corruption unit would be similar to the Scorpions, that were disbanded by the ANC.
"I'm not married to names. I'm married to functionality, efficiency and effectiveness."
He added said the ANC's deployment policy should change.
