CAPE TOWN - Police watchdogs are investigating further claims of sexual assault against a Cape Town constable.

The 32-year-old from Gugulethu was arrested on Friday for allegedly raping a sex worker two weeks ago.

He apparently also robbed her of R170.

Moses Dlamini of the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) said other sex workers have come forward with similar stories.

"There's a possibility that other charges will be added after an identification parade. Some complainants have come forward alleging that they were also raped by this policeman."

Meanwhile, advocacy group Sex Workers Education and Advocacy Taskforce (SWEAT) said it wanted justice.

SWEAT's Sally Shackleton said if the police officer is found guilty he must be held accountable for his actions.

"We hope that the magistrate confirmed will not see the complainant as someone who doesn't deserve justice. We're also hoping that the prosecutor will do their best to get justice for the complainant in this matter."
