PRETORIA- Five officers have been arrested for allegedly soliciting bribes from a drunk motorist, the Tshwane Metro Police Department confirmed on Wednesday.

Police arrested the suspects when they reported for duty in Mamelodi.

It is understood police are searching for a sixth officer involved in the incident.

Tshwane Metro Police Department spokesperson Console Tleane said it was alleged six officers stopped a motorist in Garsfontein in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He said the motorist was believed to be drunk.

"Instead of arresting the drunk man, the cops wanted to make an illegal arrangement and solicited a bribe from him."

Tleane said the man had no cash on him.

"The cops allegedly marshaled him to an ATM where the motorists gave them R1000."

The driver then reported the incident to metro police.

According to Tleane, the suspects were suspended.

Metro police management will support the police's decision to oppose bail when the officers appear in court.
