LONDON - Sprinter Caster Semenya will make her Olympic debut on Wednesday afternoon, when she takes to the track in the 800m heats.

The 21-year-old rose to prominence in 2009 after winning the World Championships in Berlin.

Big things are expected from Semenya after she was ear-marked as a potential gold medalist for Team South Africa.

She became a global superstar when she won gold in the 800m event at the International Association of Athletics Federations World Championships.

She failed to defend her title in 2011, but grabbed silver despite not being in her best form.

Manager for the Athletics team, Hezekiel Sepeng, believes South Africa's flag bearer could threaten the world record. "She's still got that energy, there is a possibility she can go even closer to the world record".

The heat gets underway at 12:35pm.
