CT City cameras nab 6
CCTV cameras assisted Cape Town police in making six arrests over the weekend.
CAPE TOWN - The city's CCTV camera system is proving to be a successful crime fighter on its own.
Over the past weekend the city's metro police arrested six people after the culprits were caught on camera committing crimes.
Three smash-and-grab suspects and three reckless drivers were arrested on Saturday after being spotted on camera.
Metro Police Deputy Chief Yolanda Faro said they dispatched dedicated teams from the control rooms.
"We've got a camera response unit which is dedicated staff deployed to where the camera's are."
Faro said they monitor known hotspots across the city.
"In terms of Vanguard Drive, they know the systems in terms of smash-and-grabs, so if they identify a suspicious people walking around there, they are required to ask operators to zoom in on these people. They are quite successful in terms of where they deployed."
