Motorists urged to comment on traffic bill
Deadline for comments on the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill looms.
CAPE TOWN - South African motorists have until 18 August to comment on the proposed changes to the National Road Traffic Amendment Bill.
The proposed bill could see further reductions in the legal blood alcohol level limit.
If the amendments are approved and become law, the legal limit will be reduced to the equivalent of 1 unit of alcohol.
The Automobile Association's Gary Ronald said this equates to 25ml of hard spirits like brandy or whiskey, or 75ml of wine which has a 14 percent volume of alcohol.
It could also translate to less than one bottle of beer.
Ronald said drunk driving is one of the main causes of car accidents on the country's roads.
