Van Zyl, Fredericks fail to impress

LONDON - Friday was not a good day for Team South Africa (SA) at the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Ahead of a highly anticipated day of track and field events, two top runners failed to make an impact.

Both 400-metre hurdlers LJ van Zyl and Cornel Fredericks crashed out of their heats earlier on Friday.

Fredericks seemed out of his depth, while van Zyl looked rusty and hesitant slumping to a seventh place finish.

It means South Africans will once again have to look to the pool for success, as swimmers Chad le Clos and Roland Schoeman compete in their respective finals.

Le Clos will swim in the men's 100-metre butterfly final at 8:38pm, alongside swimming great Michael Phelps.

Earlier this week, le Clos beat Phelps to claim gold in the 200metre butterfly final.

Schoeman will compete in the men's 50-metre freestyle final at 9:09pm.
