CCTV to be installed at Buttskop

There are plans to set up CCTV cameras at Buttskop Road level crossing, near Blackheath.

CAPE TOWN - There are plans to set up CCTV cameras at Buttskop Road level crossing, near Blackheath, following 2010's deadly taxi/train crash.

Cameras have been catching hundreds of motorists ignoring security measures at White Road level crossing in Retreat, since June 2012.

Eyewitness News took a photo of a broken boom at White Road last month, but the incident wasn't picked up by the cameras.

However, the Transport Department's Hector Elliot said the White Road cameras have been doing a good job.

"My high priority is to install CCTV cameras at Buttskop Road level crossing. I'd like to do it as soon as possible. I'll be presenting the data that we've accumulated at White Road to the stakeholders"

The Transport Department's Hector Elliot said he doesn't know why.

"I'm not sure how the incident occurred, but it seems the person must have knocked the boom without actually entering the intersection. The camera didn't come on."
