'Miss World budget must be disclosed'

The DA’s attempts at knowing the Miss World budget are continuously thwarted.

JOHANNESBURG - Opposition parties on Wednesday called for an external investigation into the city of Johannesburg's spending of R90 million on hosting the 2008 and 2009 Miss World Pageants.

In a city council meeting last week, the Democratic Alliance (DA) claimed its attempts to find out where the massive amount of money had come from, were blocked by the African National Congress.

Cope's Peter Wier said the apparent lack of transparency suggests other departments may have suffered to pay for hosting the pageant.

"We would like to see an open and transparent process on this and we would like all documents to be put on the table to be scrutinised - not just by the DA but all oppositions parties."
