JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) on Thursday returned to Marlboro to break down 100 shacks and evict residents.

Late in June, a police car was set alight when officers clashed with residents.

Thursday's evictions were peaceful.

One resident said people had no idea where they would spend the night.

"The community is helpless and does not know what to do."

JMPD spokesperson Wayne Minnaar said residents were told that they were occupying the land illegally.

"The police returned to remove the shacks, which were erect illegally."
