10,600 school dropouts in WC
An education researcher says most high school dropouts hardly ever enrol in FET colleges.
CAPE TOWN - A local education researcher on Wednesday said majority of high school dropouts were not enrolling at Further Education and Training (FET) colleges.
The Western Cape Education Department recently released figures confirming 10,600 pupils left Grades 10, 11 and 12 during 2011.
Once a learner completes grade nine or turns 15, he/she is allowed to dropout of school.
So far 2,400 Grade 10, 11 and 12 learners across the Western Cape have abandoned their schooling.
The Institute of Race Relations Jonathan Snyman said many never complete their education.
"Most pupils dropping out of school are not enrolling in FET colleges, at least not immediately."
A 2010 study by Statistics SA shows 1.6 million South Africans aged 15 or older were not numerate.
