Cops arrest '419' scam suspects

A pensioner was nearly robbed of R57,000 in an infamous 419 scam in Kempton Park.

JOHANNESBURG - Kempton Park police on Wednesday arrested two men after they tried to defraud pensioner using the infamous 419 scam.

It is understood the pensioner travelled from KwaZulu-Natal to claim her R57 million prize money.

The suspects requested that she pay R57,000 for a tax discount on her winnings.

Police were tipped-off of the scam by the victim's family.

Cops swooped on the suspects while the transaction was underway in a hotel room.

Hawks spokesperson McIntosh Polela said, "We staged an operation and arrested two suspects at a luxury hotel in a casino on the East Rand. They will face charges of fraud."
