Zuma approves 5.5% pay hike
President Jacob Zuma has approved a 5.5 percent pay hike for public office bearers.
CAPE TOWN - President Jacob Zuma on Thursday approved a 5.5 percent pay hike for public office bearers.
This after the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers announced their recommendations on Wednesday.
The 5.5 percent increase will take Zuma's annual pay package to R2.6 million.
Ministers will earn just over R2 million per annum, premiers almost R1.9 million and mayors will earn just over R1 million a year.
Commission chairperson Judge Legoabe Seriti said the proposal had the backing of the ministers of justice, finance, and public service and administration.
The increase will be 0.5 percent higher than it was in 2011.
