Parliamentarians may get salary increase

The President, Ministers, MPs and judges may get a 5,5 percent salary increase.

On Wednesday, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers made the recommendation.

CAPE TOWN - Ministers, Members of Parliament (MPs), and judges may get an increase of 5, 5 percent to their pay packages.

On Wednesday, the Independent Commission for the Remuneration of Public Office Bearers made the recommendation.

The increase will be implemented if given the green light by President Jacob Zuma.

Ministers would earn over R2 million a year while Premiers would get almost R1,9 million.

President Jacob Zuma's annual salary would jump from around R2,5 million to around R2,6 million.

The Commission's Judge Legoabe Seriti said in his experience public office bearers are usually not happy with the recommendation.

"We've had two cases pending before the north Gauteng High Court where the magistrates have brought in action against the president and the commission."

If the increases are implemented, they'll be backdated to April 2012.
