Rheenendal bus crash lawsuit on hold

After almost a year with no answers, the parents of the Rheenendal bus crash victims still intend to sue.

A bus driver and the 14 school children he was transporting were killed when their bus plunged into a river near the Southern Cape town in August 2011.

CAPE TOWN - A lawyer for the families of some of the Rheenendal bus crash victims said they still want to pursue a lawsuit.

A bus driver and the 14 school children he was transporting were killed when their bus plunged into a river near the Southern Cape town in August 2011.

Many of the families signed an agreement indicating their intention to sue the Western Cape transport and education departments as well as the Eden district municipality and the bus company African Express.

The matter has however been put on hold pending an inquest in Knysna, after the director of public prosecutions found that no one can be held responsible for the crash.

Lawyer Jerald Andrews said families want to know what went wrong on that fateful day.

"We believed the inquest will be kind of a final chapter for these families, so they will no longer suffer and at least receiver some form of an answer."

Several relatives of the victims want someone to be held accountable.
