Pilgrim's Rest tender process a 'sham'
Judge Stanley Makgoba ruled that the current tenants will stay put until the outcome of review.
PRETORIA - The North Gauteng High Court on Thursday ordered that the Mpumalanga government may not evict business owners from shops in Pilgrim's Rest.
This after the provincial Public Works Department controversially awarded leases to outside companies, to the exclusion of the existing traders.
Judge Stanley Makgoba ruled that the current tenants will stay put until the outcome of review of the tender process.
He said a tender to acquire new tenants was not transparent and conclusive, and described the process as a "sham."
It emerged that only three companies were awarded more than half of the leases.
Makgoba said that it was in the public interest that current businesses continued trading in the area.
