JOHANNESBURG - The Basic Education Department on Thursday hit back at reports that Minister Angie Motshekga knew about the Limpopo textbook crisis back in 2011, but did nothing.

The article was published on the front page of The Star newspaper under the title "Angie Messed Up".

The department said Motshekga was powerless to intervene until December, despite cash flow problems in the province.

Education spokesperson Hope Mokgatle said, "The minister had no authority to procure books on behalf of the department."

On Thursday, rights organisation Section 27 issued a statement saying some Limpopo schools were still waiting for textbooks.
