30 stabbings reported at CPT schools
Education MEC Donald Grant says safety at schools is absolutely non-negotiable.
CAPE TOWN - The provincial Education Department said it has launched several initiatives to curb stabbings at schools.
Approximately 30 pupils have been stabbed at various schools, since the beginning of 2012.
About 11 pupils have sustained minor injuries.
Valhalla Park pupil Raylinn Fortuin is the second pupil to die following a stabbing at a school, over the past 18 months.
On Monday a 19-year-old Bellville-South pupil was stabbed to death on his way home from Kasselsvlei High School.
Education MEC Donald Grant said his department are trying to identify pupils who may be at risk.
"That's part of the school-safety process. We also have gang intervention programmes where necessary, physical resources at schools and safety strategies like metal detectors and search and seizure operations"
