Thousands spent on ministers' speeding fines
The RTMC said government ministers should set an example to road users.
CAPE TOWN - The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) said government ministers should be setting an example to road users.
Parliamentary replies have revealed thousands of rands in speeding fines for the official vehicles of several cabinet ministers.
A reply to a DA parliamentary question showed Mineral Resources minister Susan Shabangu's driver racked up fines totalling just over R64, 000 between April 2009 and March 2012.
Energy Minister, Dipuo Peters, had fines totalling R40, 000 between April 2010 and March 2012.
The RTMC's Ashref Ismail said, "Certainly we would want to have a message that indicates that all political principals do settle their fines if and when they do receive them. Clearly that is what we want to see - leading by example."
