Cops warn public on email scams
KZN police calls for the public to refrain from giving out their personal info on emails.
KWAZULU NATAL - KwaZulu-Natal police on Saturday urged members of the public to be cautious of email and cellphone banking scams after two pensioners recently lost R900,000 this week.
An elderly woman received an email that said she had won money in a competition. About R200,000 disappeared from her account after responding to the email.
A man lost R700,000 from his pension fund after receiving an sms.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Jay Naicker said these types of scams have become common, this is despite alerts from authorities to not divulge any personal information.
"We want to urge the public to not divulge any personal details to emails or text messages. They should also know that nobody wins prize money without entering a competition."
