JOHANNESBURG - Team South Africa on Thursday promised to rise to the occasion and bring home medals from the Olympics.

The athletes arrived in London on Friday morning after receiving a heroes send off from hundreds of fans at OR Tambo International Airport.

The departure terminal was buzzing with fans who sang and cheered Team SA off.

A red carpet was laid down for the athletes, who turned to thank all those who attended before jetting off an SAA plane, splashed in national colours.

The games officially get underway in seven days. The event will take place between 27 July - 12 August.

Meanwhile, British authorities have put up to 1,200 soldiers on standby. This follows reports that beleaguered private firm G4S is still struggling to recruit security staff.
