Hunt on for PTA cop killers

A policeman was shot in the chest at close range after a jewellery store was robbed.

PRETORIA - The Tshwane Metro Police Department is on Friday mourning the loss of the member of its motorcycle unit.

The sergeant was gunned down after a jewellery store was robbery in the north of Pretoria on Thursday.

Police are still searching for the five suspects who held up staff at the Wonderpark Mall.

After shooting Sergeant Piet van Beekum in the chest at close range, the five gunmen raced off in a black bakkie.

The Metro Police's Console Tleane said the suspects abandoned the vehicle and took a taxi which is believed to have travelled to the Central Business District.

He said 51-year-old Van Beekum was a dedicated officer.

"He's a long serving officer with dedication and love for his job.

"He was always there when we needed him."

No arrests have yet been made.
