JOHANNESBURG - Hundreds of fans on Thursday converged on OR Tambo International Airport for Team SA's official send-off.

Athletes will jet off to London in preparation for the 2012 Olympic Games, which kick off next week Friday.

Some 250 children gathered to wish the athletes farewell.

A red carpet was set up for the competitors.

The team thanked the public for coming out to support the Olympic team.

Banyana Banyana captain Amanda Dlamini said, "Everyone should expect shibobos and tsamayas [fancy skills] because we will be representing the country the African way."

The public also got the opportunity to see the plane with the country's official colours.

Team South Africa will depart from Johannesburg at 8pm.

Earlier, Sport Minister Fikile Mbalula called on the team to bring home at least 12 medals from the Games.

South Africa won only one medal during the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
