'CT lied about budget'
The ANC says the City of Cape Town deceived residents about its budget expenditure.
CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town deceived residents about its budget expenditure, the ANC said on Thursday.
Earlier this week, Mayor Patricia de Lille boasted the city had spent 90 percent of the R4.5 billion capital budget.
The funds were mostly spent on electricity, water and sanitation.
De Lille said the municipality was on the right track as far as spending was concerned.
But the ANC said it has come up with a different finding.
Cape Town ANC Chief Whip Xolani Sotashe said the city's capital budget climbed to R5.6 billion at one stage in 2011, but he said the figure was reduced.
He said the council spent only 73 percent of its original budget.
Sotashe said officials failed to fulfill promises made to the poor.
