JOHANNESBURG - Investigations are underway into a fire in Orlando East in Soweto in which two children died.

It is now understood the two children aged seven and five were playing with matches outside their home on Monday.

Emergency services confirmed the children died in a shack fire.

It remains unclear how the two young children got their hands on the box of matches.

The police are investigating circumstances leading to the deadly fire.

The police's Nomvula Mbentse confirmed that a 10-year-old was the only witness to the incident in which his five-year-old sister died.

"The parents were not at home.

"They were left with a child of 10-years-old, who is the one who related the story."

The children's parents arrived home to find the charred remains of their little ones.
