Clinton arrives for Madiba's birthday
Former US president Bill Clinton has arrived in Qunu ahead of Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday.
QUNU - Former United States (US) president Bill Clinton has arrived in Qunu to surprise Nelson Mandela ahead of his 94th birthday on Wednesday.
Clinton and his daughter Chelsea visited the No Moscow Primary School and took part in the opening ceremony of a library there.
He stepped out of a black 4x4, much to the surprise of the school children.
Dressed in a brown suit, Clinton hugged Graça Machel before he was lead to a podium where he addressed pupils.
Clinton progressed slowly, waving to excited locals as he entered the white marquee erected on the school grounds.
He appeared to be overwhelmed by the warm welcome he received by members of the small village.
Clinton said he hopes communities can learn from Madiba's example.
"I want to remind the young people of the world that they must develop their minds and their hearts, and help us to share the future."
The former US president then donated books to a local primary school.
Earlier, Eyewitness News spoke to some of Mandela's grandchildren, who are attending celebrations along with the Clinton.
Ndaba Mandela said they are all looking forward to spending some time with the former statesman.
"There will be many gifts and we have a special surprise for him this afternoon."
