QUNU - Mandela Day celebrations kicked off in Qunu in the Eastern Cape on Monday.

Former president Nelson Mandela is currently at his homestead ahead of his 94th birthday on Wednesday.

Family, locals and delegates from all over South Africa gathered in Qunu to learn more about the heritage and culture of the small village where Mandela spent his childhood.

The Nelson Mandela Museum also launched Qunuonline, a website dedicated to the small village and a quick resource guide about Mandela's life there.

Museum CEO Khwezi Mpumlwana said there was so much about Qunu that people don't know about.

Youngsters did their bit by learning how to put Qunu on the digital map in special internet classes.

Officials then toured through Madiba's village.
