CAPE TOWN - The brother of the man who died in a shack fire on Monday said he tried everything possible to save him.

Monwabisi Ngunzi passed away on Saturday after a fire swept through the Imizamo Yethu community, destroying 80 shacks.

Some 400 people were left destitute.

Benjamin Njaba said he was struggling to come to terms with his brother's passing.

"It happened very quickly. My brother was inside and we couldn't save him."

Mandela Park resident Siphokazi Phakameza said she lost everything.

"We have to sleep with friends because we've lost everything. It's a horrible experience."

The government has donated building material to the community.
