JOHANNESBURG - Deputy Sport Minister Gert Oosthuizen and the Greek Sporting Club kicked off the Mandela Day celebrations in Johannesburg on Sunday morning.

They organised a football tournament for young players from disadvantaged backgrounds to mark former president Nelson Mandela's 94th birthday.

The dignitaries also performed their 67 minutes of community service.

Oosthuizen was joined by human rights activist George Bizos, Bafana Bafana coach Gordon Igesund and a host of other dignitaries in the spirit of Lead SA.

"It's a very magnificent initiative. We hope that there will be many more similar drives to assist the less fortunate throughout our country," the deputy minister said.

The young boys who braved the cold weather were given Black Aces soccer kits, while the girls were handed netball uniforms and shoes ahead of their games.

All the children received food hampers before singing the official 'Happy Birthday Madiba' song.
