Gigaba slams Eskom's R36m staff party
Minister Malusi Gigaba says Eksom’s R36 million expenditure was inappropriate.
JOHANNESBURG - Public Enterprises Minister Malusi Gigaba on Friday said Eskom cannot justify spending R36 million on staff parties.
Gigaba condemned the power utility's decision on the expenditure, which funded seven family days for its employees last year.
The minister confirmed that the matter is under investigation.
"When government has been asking everyone to be prudent in how they spend their resources, I think it's totally inappropriate that we should spend so much money these entertainments."
The City Press reported that Eskom blew R36 million, which is enough to provide at least one million poor households with free basic electricity for a month.
The money was reportedly used to fund a week-long 'family fun days' for staff members at the utility.
