Six men convicted for airport heist
The South Gauteng High Court finds six men guilty of staging a heist at OR Tambo International Airport.
JOHANNESBURG - Six men have been convicted for the R100 million heist at OR Tambo International Airport back in 2006.
The alleged mastermind did not arrive for the judgment in the South Gauteng High Court.
The trial, which took over six years to complete, was postponed over 50 times.
Four of the suspects have died since the heist.
Wednesday's ruling was handed down by Judge Nico Coetzee.
Fox Sithole, Eddie Ubisi and Bongani Ronny Mbuyisa were all found guilty of attempted robbery.
Ananias Nefumembe and Thokozani Ziqubu were convicted of robbery.
Uakareraije Maunda was found guilty of being an accessory after the fact.
Cecil Arendse was acquitted of all charges.
Meanwhile, alleged mastermind Christopher Billings did not show up and his mother told the court he was stuck in a roadblock.
A warrant of arrest was issued and he has since been arrested.
