Plato concerned about vigilante killings
Dan Plato says he wants to meet residents in Du Noon following a vigilante killing.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Community Safety MEC Dan Plato wants to meet with Du Noon community leaders, after a man was attacked and killed by residents on Tuesday.
Police said the suspected thief was beaten to death.
The knife-wielding man had tried to rob a resident who was on his way to work.
One woman said she could not condone violence.
"There's a lot of crime. I don't want to say I'm happy or unhappy, but if the people do something wrong, it is wrong."
Plato said his department would set up a meeting with Du Noon leaders.
"As a department, we will have to zoom in and talk to the community leadership, which is exactly what we've done in Khayelitsha; we had a very big leadership meeting in that area and vigilante killings were high on the agenda."
In recent months, Khayelitsha residents have resorted to mob justice, with some residents even torching criminals.
