De Villiers to replace Boucher
AB de Villiers will be the Proteas wicketkeeper in the first test against England.
CAPE TOWN - AB de Villiers will be the Proteas wicketkeeper in the first test against England.
De Villiers will take the gloves after Mark Boucher announced his retirement from international cricket after sustaining a lacerated eyeball in a warm up game.
The team were playing against Somerset in Taunton at the time of the incident.
Many cricket lovers began sending their tributes to Boucher on Tuesday.
Freedom Maseko tweeted "Mark Boucher trending worldwide #TrueLegend! #BoucherRetires
Arno Dolz wrote "Thank you for all the years of dedication to SA cricket! A true legend of the game. Here's to a speedy recovery! #BoucherRetires
Thami Tsolekile will be his likely replacement.
Proteas coach Gary Kirsten said de Villiers is more than capable to do the job.
"He's often said he'd like to play that role if the opportunity presented itself and he's certainly good enough."
Kirsten said Boucher wanted them to shift their focus to the upcoming series with England.
"He told the guys that he wants us to do well on this tour. We just have to focus and move forward."
Meanwhile, a tribute to Boucher will take place at Newlands Stadium later.
