CAPE TOWN - Wesbank residents said they tried to assist a man who was shot dead in the area.
Jacques Baxter's bloodied body was found outside the New Apostolic Church earlier on Tuesday.
The 37-year-old had been shot several times.
One woman said she ran to help him after she heard a commotion.
"I was locking the gate when I heard three gunshots. I ran into the house, but I heard a man screaming.
We decided to come out and see what was happening and we found him lying there, bleeding."
Police are investigating whether the shooting was gang-related.
Many communities have been affected by gang violence in recent months.
Premier Helen Zille has written to President Jacob Zuma asking him to deploy the army in an attempt to stop the bloodshed.
Many people, including young children, have been caught in the gang violence.
