Mogale City municipality to be investigated
The DA claims Mogale City did not report its over expenditure to a council that approves spending.
JOHANNESBURG - The Mogale City municipality on Monday welcomed the Democratic Alliance (DA's) call for an investigation into over expenditure of close to R30 million during the 2010 Soccer World Cup.
According to an auditor's report, the municipality's approved budget to host the Portugal national team was R6.2 million.
But the municipality overspent, and the figure ballooned to over R28 million.
The municipality's spokesperson, Nkosana Zali, acknowledged the over expenditure, but refuted claims by the DA that the matter was not reported to a council that approves spending.
"We are quite perturbed at the fact that the DA said this matter had not come to any forum of the municipality. If they had attended council meetings as they were supposed to, they would know."
Meanwhile, DA spokesperson on Local Government and Housing in Gauteng Fred Nel said the opposition party's claim that the municipality also paid companies not listed on its service provider database should be investigated.
"We would like to see the [Gauteng] Premier ordering the MEC for Finance to investigate the over expenditure within Mogale City - to ensure that the financial management of that city is rectified."
