CAPE TOWN - Staff at a Khayelitsha crèche on Monday said they were not sure whether the facility would reopen its doors this week.

The Lisakhanya Educare Centre was temporarily shut down following heavy downpours.

The three-room shack has been drenched and the floor is muddy, making it impossible for children and teachers to move around.

Over 2,000 people living in the township have received emergency assistance as a result of the rain.

Centre manager Vuyiswa Dlwanyo said, "The centre gets flooded and I can't keep the kids here because they'll get sick."

The Cape has been experiencing heavy rains in the past few days and many roads were flooded over the weekend.
