JOHANNESBURG - Emergency Management Services (EMS) have called on the public and non-governmental organisations to help with relief for shack fire victims from the Princess Informal Settlement in Roodepoort, on the West Rand.

Some 50 people were left homeless when 40 shacks burnt down on Sunday morning.

One man was burnt beyond recognition in the widespread blaze.

EMS workers believe the fire was sparked by an unattended candle in one of the shacks.

Firefighters said people willing to assist destitute residents could drop-off clothing, food and blankets at the Sandton Fire Station

EMS spokesperson Robert Mulaudzi also pleaded with organisations to supply building material to assist residents from the informal settlement rebuild their homes and lives.
