CAPE TOWN - A Congress of the People (Cope) official, who allegedly tried to open the door of a South African Airways (SAA) plane on a flight to India, will return to South Africa on Tuesday.

Dirk Feldman, who serves as an MP in the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), was detained by Indian authorities on Saturday.

He was part of an official Parliamentary delegation visiting the country.

Feldman's cellphone remained switched off, making it difficult for party seniors like Dennis Bloem to contact him.

"Feldman is apparently on his way to South Africa. I'm waiting for him so we can discuss this whole story."

Spokesperson for the ANC chief whip's office, Moloto Mothapo, said the incident was embarrassing for Parliament.

"This is not the kind of image that we want to send to the international community."

Bloem and Mothapo said they will await a full report from Parliament's presiding officers.
