JOHANNESBURG - Various accidents have claimed the lives of at least eight people on South Africa's roads.

In the first accident early on Sunday, three men and a woman were killed in a head-on collision on the R21 before the Nellmapius Road off ramp in Pretoria.

Witnesses said one of the vehicles may have been driving against the flow of traffic along the highway when it crashed into the other car.

ER24's Vanessa Jackson said the only survivor of the accident was transported to hospital and treated for moderate injuries.

Meanwhile in Cape Town a man was killed and three others injured following a taxi accident on the N1 between the Sable and Koeberg off ramps.

Reports indicate the taxi experienced mechanical failure causing the driver to lose control and roll the vehicle.

And in Pietermaritzburg, three people were killed and eight injured in two separate accidents.
