Justice Dept. warns maintenance defaulters
The Justice Department on Thursday said it would start implementing Operation Isondlo next week.
CAPE TOWN - The Justice Department will start implementing Operation Isondlo next week.
It aims to track down defaulters and beneficiaries.
In 2011, the department identified 890 men and women with warrants of arrest against them and 642 were caught.
The department's Western Cape head Hishaam Mohammed on Thursday said defaulters who owe almost R10 million collectively could end up in jail.
"Some repeat offenders have had their goods confiscated. For example, if someone can afford an iPad but they can't pay maintenance, we confiscate the iPad."
Mohamed warned defaulters that policeman could be knocking on their door's soon.
"From 10 July we have identified 1,200 alleged maintenance defaulters for whom warrants of arrests have been issued our target is to arrest them by 10 December."
The department said it would do everything in its power to ensure that children are not deprived of basic needs and education.
