CAPE TOWN - The Western Cape Health department on Tuesday said it had reassured all staff at GF Jooste Hospital that their jobs were safe.

But Eyewitness News was not allowed to canvas the opinion of any staff during a visit to the hospital today.

The department plans to demolish the institution early next year and then rebuild it at a cost of R550 million.

It is difficult to gauge the sentiment of doctors and nurses about the plans for the hospital.

The hospital will be demolished in 2013 and provincial authorities said it would take 36 months to rebuild the facility.

During that period nurses and doctors will be moved to Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha, while patients will also be redirected there.

Eyewitness News was only allowed to speak to one doctor and a nurse, who both said they have come to terms with the reconstruction plans.

Some patients outside the facility said the revamp was needed and said they were informed they would have to go elsewhere for healthcare in the interim.
