Basic Education Dep fighting another battle
The Basic Education Department is being pushed to implement basic norms in schools.
CAPE TOWN - The Basic Education Department is also fighting another battle, saying its lawyers are still dealing with the application brought against it to implement basic norms and standards at all schools.
Equal Education has challenged the department in the Bisho High Court to provide basic needs like libraries at schools, especially in the Eastern Cape.
The department has requested three extensions to respond but has failed to meet any of the deadlines.
Equal Education's Joey Hasson said he was disappointed "there has been a response."
"We still haven't heard from the department, we do have a written undertaking from them [that] they would reply by 15 June."
The department has come under intense scrutiny in recent weeks over the late delivery of textbooks to schools in Limpopo.
Dozens of schools only received textbooks last week, six months after the start of the school year.
