MEC praises cops for drug bust
Gauteng police have been praised for the arrest of three men who were allegedly transporting drugs.
JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Department of Community Safety on Sunday applauded the police for the arrest of three men who were allegedly transporting drugs with an estimated street value of R43 million.
The men were apprehended on Saturday by the Hawks in Randfontein west of Johannesburg after receiving a tip off.
Police believe the truck carrying the drugs was from Tanzania and had come through the Botswana border.
Community Safety's Thapelo Moiloa described the arrests as a breakthrough in curbing drug related crimes in the province.
"The MEC for safety is congratulating the SAPS on their speedy arrest of the drug lords. We are quite aware that drugs are one of the major contributing factors to the levels of crimes in our country."
More police investigations are underway to determine how many people are part of the syndicate.
