Service Delivery Protests

JOHANNESBURG - At least 99 people were arrested for public violence after burning tyres and throwing missiles at police in Britz in the North West Province on Saturday.

Villagers held a meeting with the Bethanie Village chief and became violent after they were informed of alleged mismanagement of funds.

Police were called to the scene and angry residents started throwing stones at their cars. Police then fired rubber bullets at the crowd.

The police's Amanda Funani said, "The suspects were protesting against poor service delivery. They are expected to appear in the Garankuwa Magistrate Court on Monday."

The country has been battling to curb violent service delivery protests. In some cases, protesters have destroyed municipal property.

Some councillors' houses have been burnt down by angry crowds in Soweto.
