CAPE TOWN - The City of Cape Town on Friday launched a housing safety unit.

Its members will be going door-to-door to check on council property.

The city manages more than 43,500 rental units.

Unit members will also check whether tenants are using properties for criminal activities.

In many areas, gang members and drug dealers operate from council homes.

Housing law officers began their duties in Elsies River earlier.

The officers went door to door with a check list to see whether the correct occupants had ownership of city property.

They will also be checking on bylaw transgressions and other criminal activities like shebeens being run from council houses.
