CAPE TOWN - Western Cape Human Settlements Department on Wednesday said officials were finalising the verification of housing lists for residents from both Malawi and Free Farm informal settlements.

Residents from these communities near Bishop Lavis recently blockaded roads in the area with burning tyres protesting over lack of houses and other services.

They also questioned allocation process of beneficiaries in housing developments nearby.

Western Cape Human Settlements spokesperson Bruce Oom said when all this is done they will meet with these communities.

"The process should take another few days, after which Minister Madikizela will personally go out into the communities and explain who qualifies, who does not and the reasons why. In this way, he will make sure that the people, who really need houses, get them."

The province has a housing backlog dating back to 24 years.
