Nyanga has highest crime rate in CT
With Nyanga’s growing crime rate, Cape Town City bosses are looking at community surveillance.
CAPE TOWN - Cape Town City bosses on Wednesday said many improvements will be made in Nyanga to help bring down the crime rate.
A dedicated public transport unit is one of their plans for the area.
They said Nyanga is the area with the highest crime rate, so commuters are often robbed and assaulted when getting off taxis or buses.
The city's JP Smith said other than the improvements to public transport safety; other changes will also need to be made.
"Nyanga has the highest crime rate in the city, and so the community has very serious challenges. [It has a] murder rate that is off the charts, most of their challenges lie in that area."
Smith said they were looking at installing surveillance cameras.
"I've got a couple of very good officers who are quite serious about working in that area. I would like to give them a local porter prison."
Meanwhile, a 21-year-old lesbian was shot dead in the area last weekend. The area has recorded a number of hate crimes in recent months.
