Metrorail ticket prices rise
Metrorail commuters, who purchase monthly tickets, should expect an increase in travelling costs.
CAPE TOWN - Metrorail commuters, who purchase monthly tickets, should expect an increase in travelling costs, starting next week.
The monthly fare concession period has come to an end. On 1 April, general Metrorail prices increased.
Trade unions complained about the brief notification of the tariff hike, resulting in an agreement to offer monthly tickets at the usual rate for three additional months.
Metrorail's Mthuthuzeli Swartz said from next month "we will have the original prices that were agreed upon being effective. It only affects monthly tickets."
The rail company said with aging infrastructure and rolling stock there are often problems with the rail service during winter.
Mthuthuzeli said they are trying to rectify this.
"Because of the infrastructure, when it rains, it does seep through the holes. The electrical systems do cut short because of the water."
