Drop in serious crimes
Minister Jeff Radebe says crime prosecution rates have increased significantly.
PRETORIA - The number of serious crimes dropped in the first quarter of 2011 and successful prosecution of those crimes increased, Justice Minister Jeff Radebe said on Monday.
Radebe was speaking at the inter-ministerial justice cluster briefing in Pretoria.
He said finalised serious and violent crime prosecutions increased from 535 to more than 1700 in 2011.
The minister said the state secured an 85 percent conviction rate.
Organised crime prosecutors convicted criminals in 9 out of ten of their cases.
Radebe said serious crime dropped marginally by 0,5 percent between January and March 2012.
He also congratulated newly-appointed police commissioner Riah Phiyega and said he was confident she would build on the successes of her predecessors.
Phiyega said police will issue a statement on Tuesday announcing an acting head of Crime Intelligence to replace suspended policeman Richard Mdluli.
