CT lesbian shot dead
Police are investigating a case of murder after a lesbian was shot dead at her home.
CAPE TOWN - Western Cape police are investigating a case of murder following the killing of a woman in Nyanga, Cape Town apparently because she was a lesbian.
Phumeza Nkolonzi was shot dead while at home at the weekend.
Gender activists Funeka Soldaat insists the 21-year-old was killed because she was a lesbian.
"Everyone knew that Phumeza was a lesbian."
The police's Frederick van Wyk said they were investigating the matter.
"No one has been arrested yet. A murder case has been opened."
Earlier in June, another lesbian was stabbed several times in Nyanga.
Lesbians are targeted in townships throughout the country. Some are raped by people who believe they can change their sexual orientation.
In a separate incident, a 23-year-old was murdered in Northern Cape allegedly because he was gay.
Thapelo Makutle was attacked after apparently walking home from a club. His head was almost entirely severed from his body.
Police are still investigating the matter.
